Celebrating Yoga Day with Purpose: A Journey with Dhai Aakhar Foundation
Celebrating Yoga Day with Purpose: A Journey with Dhai Aakhar Foundation International Yoga Day on 21st June each year is not just a global wellness movement — it’s International Yoga Day of harmony, equilibrium, and awareness. At Dhai Aakhar Foundation, we celebrate the day not just by doing yoga but by imparting to children the real spirit behind it. Yoga isn’t just stretching and concentrating or physical movements — it is a journey to peace, self-control, and inner strength, particularly for disadvantaged children with whom we spend the day.
Why Do We Celebrate Yoga Day?
Yoga Day was declared by the United Nations in 2014 at India’s initiative, celebrating the ancient Indian practice as a jewel of physical and mental health. The day reminds us that true health is the product of harmony — of body, mind, and spirit. We celebrate the day at Dhai Aakhar to give our children the healing and empowering energy of yoga, especially those deprived of, or without, formal fitness or mindfulness training.
What Happens at Dhai Aakhar on Yoga Day?
At our learning centres across Bihar, Delhi, Noida, and Jharkhand, we organise special Yoga Day events for the children and the local community. Under the open sky or under the trees where many of our classes take place, children and volunteers participate in guided yoga sessions. From simple breathing exercises to basic asanas, we focus on accessible forms of yoga that children can easily learn and practice at home. We pair yoga with storytelling, meditation, and music, making it fun and relatable.
What Is Our Purpose?
For Dhai Aakhar Foundation, Yoga Day is not just one day. It’s a demonstration of the holistic learning that we believe in. Learning is more than books — it’s learning to be a healthy, questioning, and well-rounded human being. We learn self-awareness, peace, and resilience through yoga, which is what they must learn to survive in a world that has not always treated them kindly. We plant the seeds of discipline and self-love early so they grow deep roots.
What Message Do We Share?
Our message is one of strength and simplicity: “Every child, wherever they’re from, deserves peace — within and around them.” Yoga gives them that space. No matter the background of the child, whether they are raised in a rural village or in a Noida slum, Yoga Day reminds them that they are part of something greater — an international celebration of health, hope, and harmony. We remind them that yoga is not a privilege, but a right — a right to heal, to grow, to be seen.
A Child’s Perspective: What Yoga Means to Them
When asked about yoga, Pooja, a 9-year-old from our Noida centre, said, “Didi, when I close my eyes and breathe slowly, I feel like I’m sitting on a cloud.” Another student, Ravi, chimed in, “I used to get very angry fast. But now, after yoga, I don’t shout so much.” Their innocent words reflect the transformation we aim for — subtle but powerful changes in behavior, confidence, and peace of mind.
